# WishCare Beauty & Hair Care Glossary

A practical, evidence-aware guide to ingredients and concerns found across skincare, scalp care, hair care and body care. Each definition separates what a cosmetic can reasonably support from claims that need product-specific evidence or professional diagnosis.

## How to use this glossary

Start with the term you saw on a label or in a routine. Standalone guides explain what it means, what results are realistic, how it fits into a routine, safety limits and when expert care may be useful. Product links are examples of where WishCare uses or addresses the term; they are not a substitute for reading the current label.

The glossary does not publish an ingredient until its identity is clear enough to explain responsibly. It also keeps cosmetic guidance separate from diagnosis or treatment of acne, pigmentation, dandruff and hair loss.

## Ingredients

### [Niacinamide](/glossary/niacinamide)

Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 used in skincare to support the skin barrier and improve the appearance of uneven tone and excess oil. Niacinamide is the water-soluble amide form of vitamin B3. In a cosmetic formula it is used as a skin-conditioning ingredient rather than as a vitamin supplement. It is popular because one ingredient can support several everyday goals: a more resilient moisture barrier, less visible oiliness and a more even-looking tone.

### [Vitamin C](/glossary/vitamin-c)

Vitamin C is an antioxidant used in skincare to support brighter-looking skin and help protect against oxidative stress. Vitamin C is an antioxidant used in skincare to help limit oxidative stress and support brighter, more even-looking skin. The name covers several ingredients: pure ascorbic acid and vitamin C derivatives do not have identical stability, penetration or evidence. Packaging, pH and the complete formulation can therefore matter as much as the percentage on the front label.

### [Salicylic Acid (BHA)](/glossary/salicylic-acid-bha)

Salicylic acid is an oil-soluble exfoliant that helps loosen dead-cell buildup on the skin surface and inside oily pores. Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid that is soluble in oil. In skincare it helps loosen compacted surface cells and material within oily pores; in scalp and body products it can help lift scale or rough buildup. A cleanser, leave-on lotion and shampoo deliver it differently, so their strengths and contact times are not interchangeable.

### [AHA: Glycolic Acid and Lactic Acid](/glossary/aha-glycolic-lactic-acid)

Alpha hydroxy acids are water-soluble exfoliants that help remove loosely attached surface cells. Glycolic acid and lactic acid are two common AHAs. Alpha hydroxy acids are water-soluble exfoliating ingredients. Glycolic acid has a smaller molecular size and often feels more active, while lactic acid also has humectant properties and may suit people seeking a gentler-feeling option. The finished formula, acid concentration and pH determine how strongly either product behaves.

### [Ceramides](/glossary/ceramides)

Ceramides are lipids naturally found in the outer skin layer. In topical products, they are used to support a healthy moisture barrier and reduce water loss. Ceramides are lipid molecules naturally present between cells in the outer skin layer. Together with cholesterol and fatty acids they help form a barrier that slows water loss and limits entry of irritants. Cosmetic ceramides are added to moisturisers, cleansers and some hair products to support conditioning and barrier care.

### [Hyaluronic Acid](/glossary/hyaluronic-acid)

Hyaluronic acid is a humectant that attracts and holds water in cosmetic formulas and at the skin or hair surface. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant: it binds water and helps a formula hold moisture at the skin or hair surface. Cosmetic labels may also use sodium hyaluronate or describe different molecular weights. Topical hyaluronic acid is not the same intervention as an injectable dermal filler, even though both use related molecules.

### [Kojic Acid](/glossary/kojic-acid)

Kojic acid is used in skincare to help reduce the appearance of excess pigmentation by influencing steps involved in melanin production. Kojic acid is a skin-brightening ingredient produced from certain fungi or fermentation processes. In topical skincare it is used to influence tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in melanin production. It is therefore aimed at excess pigmentation rather than at bleaching a person's natural skin tone.

### [Redensyl](/glossary#redensyl)

Redensyl is a proprietary cosmetic ingredient blend used in scalp products marketed for fuller-looking hair and reduced hair fall. Redensyl is a proprietary blend used in cosmetic scalp serums for fuller-looking hair. Evidence should be checked for the exact blend and finished formula; it is not interchangeable with an approved hair-loss medicine.

### [AnaGain](/glossary#anagain)

AnaGain is a pea-sprout-derived proprietary cosmetic ingredient used in some scalp serums. AnaGain is a proprietary pea-shoot-derived cosmetic ingredient used in some scalp formulas. Supplier or blend-level research should not be treated as proof that every finished product regrows hair.

### [Baicapil](/glossary#baicapil)

Baicapil is a proprietary botanical ingredient complex used in cosmetic scalp products intended to support fuller-looking hair. Baicapil is a proprietary cosmetic blend used in scalp products positioned for density and reduced shedding. Product concentration, finished-formula testing and the cause of hair loss all matter.

### [Multi-Peptide Complex](/glossary/peptides-hair-care)

Multi-peptide complex is an umbrella term for a blend of short amino-acid chains used in hair or scalp formulas. Peptides are short chains of amino acids. “Multi-peptide complex” describes a blend, not one standard ingredient: two products can use the phrase while containing different peptide names, supporting ingredients and concentrations. In hair care, peptides may be used for scalp-conditioning or fibre-conditioning claims, depending on the exact formula.

### [Rosemary](/glossary/rosemary-hair-care)

Rosemary extract or rosemary oil is used in scalp products for fragrance, antioxidant properties and potential hair-support benefits. Rosemary is an aromatic herb whose essential oil is used in some scalp and hair products. Essential oil is highly concentrated and is different from rosemary water, an extract or a culinary infusion. The vehicle, concentration and formulation determine both exposure and tolerability.

### [Caffeine](/glossary/caffeine)

Caffeine is used in scalp and eye-area cosmetics for its stimulant and appearance-support roles. Caffeine is a stimulant that can be formulated into leave-on or rinse-off scalp products. Laboratory findings suggest possible effects on hair follicles, but reaching a follicle in a dish is different from producing a meaningful result on a person's scalp. Vehicle, contact time and the finished formula matter.

### [Rice Water](/glossary#rice-water)

Rice-water-derived ingredients are used in haircare for conditioning, smoothness and reduced breakage appearance. Rice water contains starches and other water-soluble components and is used in hair care for conditioning and slip. It may improve feel temporarily but does not biologically repair hair or prove faster growth.

### [Piroctone Olamine](/glossary/piroctone-olamine)

Piroctone olamine is an antifungal ingredient used in anti-dandruff hair and scalp products. Piroctone olamine is an antifungal ingredient used in anti-dandruff scalp products. It helps control microorganisms associated with dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis, but a shampoo's performance also depends on concentration, supporting cleansers, contact time and how regularly it is used.

### [Zinc PCA](/glossary/zinc-pca)

Zinc PCA combines zinc with pyrrolidone carboxylic acid and is used in cosmetics intended for oily or blemish-prone skin. Zinc PCA combines zinc with pyrrolidone carboxylic acid, a component related to the skin's natural moisturising factors. It is used in cosmetic formulas aimed at oily or blemish-prone skin and scalp. Its role and effective amount depend on the full formula, not simply the presence of the word zinc.

### [Licorice](/glossary/licorice-extract)

Licorice-derived extracts are used in skincare to support a more even-looking tone and soothe the appearance of irritation. Licorice extract is a botanical ingredient used in skincare for soothing and tone-evening goals. It contains multiple compounds, including glabridin and liquiritin, but extracts vary by species, plant part and manufacturing method. Evidence for one standardised extract cannot be assumed for every product described as licorice.

### [SPF Filters](/glossary/sunscreen-filters)

Sunscreen filters are ingredients that reduce the amount of ultraviolet radiation reaching the skin when a product is applied correctly. Sunscreen filters are the ingredients that absorb, scatter or reflect ultraviolet radiation within a tested sunscreen formula. Organic and inorganic filters can both provide effective protection. The important consumer information is the finished product's broad-spectrum claim, SPF, water-resistance instructions and directions—not whether one filter is marketed as “chemical” or “physical.”

### [Retinol](https://ai.mywishcare.com/retinal-vs-retinol-vs-tretinoin-what-s-the-actual-difference)

Retinol is a vitamin A derivative in the retinoid family. It is used to improve the appearance of fine lines, uneven tone and rough texture over time. Open the linked guide for the term's practical context, limits and safe-use guidance.

## Skin, scalp and hair concerns

### [Pigmentation](/glossary/pigmentation)

Pigmentation describes colour produced by melanin. Uneven pigmentation can follow sun exposure, inflammation, acne, hormones or other skin conditions. Pigmentation means colour produced by melanin. In beauty conversations it usually refers to areas that look darker than the surrounding skin, such as post-acne marks, melasma or sun spots. These are not one condition: their triggers, depth and treatment differ, especially in deeper skin tones where irritation itself can leave a mark.

### [Sun Damage](/glossary/sun-damage)

Sun damage is the cumulative effect of ultraviolet exposure on skin, including tanning, uneven pigmentation, loss of firmness and increased skin-cancer risk. Sun damage is cumulative change caused mainly by ultraviolet exposure. It can appear as tanning, uneven pigment, roughness, loss of elasticity or visible lines, and it also raises skin-cancer risk. A tan is a sign that skin has responded to UV injury; it is not a protective or healthy endpoint.

### [Tan](/glossary#tan)

A tan is an increase in melanin produced after ultraviolet exposure. It is a sign that the skin has responded to UV, not evidence of safe sun exposure. A tan is increased pigment produced after ultraviolet exposure and is a sign of skin injury, not a health benefit. Gentle care may improve uneven appearance, while sun protection helps prevent further darkening.

### [Damaged Hair](/glossary/damaged-hair)

Hair damage is physical and chemical wear to the hair fibre caused by heat, colouring, bleaching, friction, ultraviolet exposure and repeated grooming. Hair fibre is non-living keratin. “Damaged hair” describes weathering of its protective cuticle and inner structure from friction, heat, bleaching, colouring, UV exposure or repeated swelling and drying. It may feel rough, tangle easily, lose shine or break, especially toward older ends.

### [Dry Hair](/glossary/dry-hair)

Dry hair feels rough, stiff or difficult to manage because the fibre lacks surface lipids, has raised cuticles or has been weathered by washing, heat or chemical services. Dry hair feels rough or lacks flexibility because the fibre surface has insufficient lubrication or has become weathered. Curly and coily hair can feel drier because scalp oils travel less easily along bends. Frequent cleansing, hot water, heat styling, colour, sun and friction can add to the problem.

### [Oily scalp](/glossary#oily-scalp)

An oily scalp produces enough sebum to make the roots look or feel greasy soon after washing. An oily scalp produces enough sebum to look or feel greasy quickly. Cleansing frequency, hair texture, climate and scalp conditions matter; stripping or scratching can worsen comfort.

### [Hair fall](https://ai.mywishcare.com/how-can-i-reduce-hair-fall-after-moving-to-a-city-with-hard-water)

Hair fall can mean normal shedding, increased shedding from the root, breakage along the shaft or progressive thinning. These are not the same problem. Open the linked guide for the term's practical context, limits and safe-use guidance.

### [Hair growth](/glossary/hair-growth)

Hair grows in cycles, so visible changes in density take time and depend on the cause of thinning or shedding. Hair growth occurs in cycles within living follicles. The visible shaft then lengthens from the scalp, while normal daily shedding removes hairs that have reached the resting phase. Genetics, hormones, age, illness, nutrition, medicines, scalp disease and styling practices can all affect density or retention.

### [Oily Skin](https://ai.mywishcare.com/the-best-moisturizer-for-oily-combination-skin-that-won-t-disrupt-your-makeup)

Oily skin produces more visible sebum, often around the forehead, nose and chin. Oily skin can still feel dehydrated or irritated. Open the linked guide for the term's practical context, limits and safe-use guidance.

### [Dry Dull Skin](https://ai.mywishcare.com/why-does-my-skin-look-tired-even-when-i-m-not-tired)

Dry skin lacks enough water or lipids at the surface. Dullness can also come from rough texture, irritation, pigment or surface buildup. Open the linked guide for the term's practical context, limits and safe-use guidance.

### [Acne & Acne Marks](/glossary/acne-acne-marks)

Acne includes clogged pores and inflamed spots. Flat red or brown marks left after acne are different from active acne and from indented or raised scars. Acne develops when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead cells, with inflammation and bacteria contributing to some lesions. Blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, nodules and cysts are not identical. After inflammation settles, flat brown marks can remain; these marks are different from indented or raised scars.

### [Open Pores](/glossary/visible-pores)

Pores do not literally open and close. They can look larger when they contain oil and debris or when surrounding skin loses firmness. Pores are normal openings through which hair follicles and oil reach the skin surface. They do not physically open and close like doors. Oil, clogged material, inflammation, genetics, sun-related loss of firmness and viewing conditions can make them look more noticeable.

### [Strawberry skin](/glossary/strawberry-skin)

Strawberry skin is an informal term for dark or rough-looking dots around hair follicles, often on the legs or arms. “Strawberry skin” is a visual description for dark dots or bumps around follicles, often on legs or arms. It may reflect keratosis pilaris, shaving-related irritation, ingrown hairs, clogged follicles or post-inflammatory pigment. Because several conditions look similar, the nickname is not a diagnosis.

### [Anti aging](/glossary#skin-ageing)

Skin ageing includes gradual changes in texture, firmness, pigmentation and fine lines caused by time, genetics and environmental exposure. Skin ageing includes gradual changes in texture, pigment, firmness and lines from time, genetics and environmental exposure. Sunscreen, moisturiser and appropriate actives can support appearance but cannot stop ageing.

### [Dark circles](https://ai.mywishcare.com/blue-dark-circles-vs-brown-dark-circles-which-treatment-actually-works)

Dark circles can come from pigment, visible blood vessels, thin skin, shadowing from facial structure, puffiness or a combination of factors. Open the linked guide for the term's practical context, limits and safe-use guidance.

### [Dandruff](/glossary/dandruff)

Dandruff is a recurring scalp condition that causes visible flakes and may include itching or redness. It is not simply a sign of poor hygiene. Dandruff is a common scalp condition that causes visible flakes and often itching. It is associated with scalp oil, individual susceptibility and Malassezia yeasts, but flakes can also come from product irritation, eczema, psoriasis or fungal infection. A very dry hair length does not prove the scalp itself is dry.

### [Split ends](/glossary#split-ends)

Split ends occur when the protective outer layers of a hair fibre wear away and the end frays into two or more branches. Split ends are physical separations at weathered hair tips. Conditioning can temporarily smooth them and reduce further friction, but trimming is the only way to remove an existing split.

### [Frizzy hair](/glossary/frizzy-hair)

Frizz appears when hair fibres do not lie smoothly together, often because of cuticle damage, dryness, curl pattern, static or humidity. Frizz occurs when hair fibres do not lie together smoothly. Humidity, static, cuticle damage, curl pattern, dryness and friction can all contribute. It is a cosmetic behaviour of the shaft, not proof that hair is unhealthy, and some natural textures have more volume or flyaways by design.
